About the World Championships
The World Championships in Athletics (official designation IAAF World Championships in Athletics) are competitions to determine the world champions in the individual athletics disciplines. They have been organised by the IAAF since 1983 and are the fifth largest sporting event in the world after the Olympic Games, the Football World Cup, the Rugby Union World Cup and the European Football Championship.
Originally, the World Cups took place every four years, since 1991 every two years. In the intervening years either the Olympic Games and/or the European Championships take place.
In addition to the outdoor World Championships, there have also been indoor World Championships since 1985. Since 2004 they take place in the even years between the outdoor world championships.
Forerunners were two events in the Olympic years 1976 and 1980, at which world champions in non-Olympic athletics disciplines were determined. In 1976 in Malmö the world champion in 50 km men’s walking was determined, in 1980 in Sittard in two women’s competitions (3000 m run and 400 m hurdles) world champions were determined.
World Athletics Championships 2019
The 2019 World Championships in Athletics will take place in Qatar – due to the heat in autumn and not as usual in summer. The 5,000 and 10,000 metre runner Richard Ringer said in the dlf that he feared empty spectator stands. And he criticized the treatment of guest workers in Qatar.
Ringer asked whether the IAAF really supported the country by awarding the contract to the desert state of Qatar and why the new main sponsor of the IAAF should be a bank from Qatar. Money always plays a role, according to the best German runner over the 5,000 and 10,000 metres. Ringers suggestion: to let the World Championships take place as a cycle each time in a different continent. This would mean that every tenth year the World Championships would take place on their own continent. Internal tenders could then take place there – or one could specify a stadium per continent – like Berlin in Europe and Los Angeles in America.
Ringer doubted that interested spectators from Europe would travel to Doha for the World Cup. This is a long journey that costs a lot of money. He is curious to see who will be watching and whether groups will have to cheer according to certain guidelines. Whether it was a mistake to award the World Cup to Qatar can only be said once it has taken place. From an organisational point of view, the competitions would probably be good, according to Ringer, but: “If you’ve noticed what the working conditions were like when the stadium was built, that some people had to give their lives, it’s pretty hard. One is “rather negatively inclined”. But at some point you have to accept it and concentrate on your training.
As far as the heat in Qatar is concerned, Africans would probably have an advantage. On the other hand, there have been many surprises in the heat. At high temperatures everyone was running slower. In addition, the stadium is air-conditioned, the national coaches have already convinced themselves.
