About the Summer Universiade

The University Games are the international sporting events that bring together university athletes from all over the world. Universiades are organized by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The word “Universiade” comes from the combination of the words “University” and “Olympics”, also used more correct terms such as World University Games or World Student Games, although currently its use is frequent in non-university student competitions.

The sports practiced in the Summer University Games are: football, diving, athletics, basketball, gymnastics, fencing, judo, wrestling, shooting, water polo, taekwondo, tennis, volleyball, sailing and swimming. Winter Universiades also offer alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, ski jumping, Nordic combined skiing, biathlon, snowboarding, curling, figure skating, speed skating and ice hockey.

World Student Games (Pre-Universiades)

An “International University Championship” was held for the first time in 1923 promoted by the Union Nationale des Étudiants de France (UNEF). The World Summer Student Games officially began in 1924 and were organised by the Confédération Internationale des Étudiants (CIE), in 1930 they were renamed and renamed International University Games. In 1949 it was decided that they would be held every two years under the name of International Summer Sports University Week, organised by the Fédération Internationale du Sport Universitaire (FISU), they began to be called World Student Games from 1957. The term Universiades was used for the first time at the 1959 Turin Games.

World Student Games (UIE)

The first official World Student Games were held in 1924 and were organised by the Fédération Internationale du Sport Universitaire (FISU) since 1949. An alternative event was organised by the Union Internationale des Étudiants (UIE) from 1947 to 1962, including unofficial games in 1954.
