About the Masters Tournament

The Masters Tournament, or The Masters for short, is one of the four major tournaments in golf.

General information

The tournament, which has been held since 1934, is organized by the Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta (Georgia), USA. In contrast to the other major tournaments, the Masters – an official event of the PGA TOUR and PGA European Tour – is an invitational tournament. However, there is a catalogue of formal invitation criteria that ensure that the world’s best players can compete.

The golf tournament will be held over four rounds (Thursday to Sunday). After two rounds, the field will be reduced to the top 50 plus matches and all within ten strokes of the leader. The tournament is scheduled so that the final day is usually the second Sunday in April. Since 1960, the par 3 contest has been held on the short course on the Wednesday before.

Green Jacket

Since 1949, the winner has been awarded a green jacket (“Green Jacket”) and a lifelong right to participate. It is a tradition that the winner of the previous year helps the current winner into the jacket at the victory ceremony. At first, the possibility was overlooked that the winner of the previous year could also be the current winner. Jack Nicklaus put on the jacket himself at the suggestion of Bobby Jones during his successful title defence in 1966. In the repeat victories of Nick Faldo (1989 and 1990) and Tiger Woods (2001 and 2002), the club chairman then took over the assisting task.

During the decisive phase of the tournament, Green Jackets will be available in a suitable size for all possible winners, so that the award ceremony can take place promptly. The winner will then be measured and given a tailor-made jacket to take home for one year. The jacket is then kept in the clubhouse and is available for visits at any time.

Further trophies

In addition to the Green Jacket, the winner will also receive a gold medal and a replica of the clubhouse in silver. In addition, he will receive invitations to the other three majors and the Players Championship over the next five years, as well as five years’ eligibility to the PGA Tour. The winner may also choose the menu at the “Champions’ Dinner” next year. Foreign winners usually present delicacies from their homeland: Bernhard Langer from Germany, for example, brought Sauerbraten (1986), the Scotsman Sandy Lyle served Haggis (1989), the Spaniard José María Olazábal waited with Paella (1995), and Charl Schwartzel from South Africa presented a South African barbecue (2012). Most fine dinners are held, but in 1998 Tiger Woods had a hearty menu served with cheeseburgers, chicken and milkshakes.

The runner-up gets a silver plate and a medal, the best amateur the Silver Cup, the second best the Silver Medal. There is a crystal vase for the best round of the day, a crystal bowl for a hole-in-one or an albatross and two crystal glasses for each eagle.
