About the FIBA Basketball World Cup

Shenzhen In China, the groups for the 2019 World Basketball Championship have been drawn. The Germans are avoiding the favoured USA for the time being.

A feasible group, a rocky road: On their return to the World Cup stage, the German basketball team headed by NBA professional Dennis Schröder is spared a duel with defending champion USA for the time being, but in China, the big tournament favourite threatens to be the opponent in the quarter-finals. Although the preliminary round group with the greatest challenge France and the Unknown Dominican Republic as well as Jordan is feasible, there could be no question of luck in the draw.

Team captain Robin Benzing saw things differently. “We almost ended up in the USA group. But then the lottery fairy was on our side,” said the Besiktas Istanbul veteran after the draw in Shenzhen, where the national team will play their games. Group G is “all right, we can live with that”.

For the national coach, “Group A would certainly have been dreamless, but that’s okay,” said Henrik Rödl, who was also happy that the team is not going against the USA. The host, Venezuela, Poland and Côte d’Ivoire will meet in his “desired group”.

At the World Championship in late summer (31 August to 15 September/all matches at MagentaSport) the selection of the German Basketball Federation (DBB) must be at least second to reach the second tournament phase. This is absolutely realistic after the strong performances in the World Cup qualification – but after that it should be tricky.

In the intermediate round, two teams from the strong Group H with Lithuania, Australia, Canada and Senegal will play their way forward. “The crossover group is brutally difficult,” said Rödl. It will be important to take as many points as possible from the first three games. The opening opponents will be France on August 31, followed by the Dominican Republic (September 2) and Jordan (September 4).

The French are old acquaintances. The German team has competed 64 times against the 2013 European Champion and 2014 World Cup third, with 22 victories. In the last duel so far, the team around director Schröder defeated the Equipe Tricolore 2017 in the European Championships round of sixteen in Istanbul.

Little is known about the other two opponents. The Dominican Republic has never been an opponent of a German national team before, in the only match against Jordan, a clear success was achieved at the 2010 World Cup in Kayseri, Turkey (91:73).

“I’m quite satisfied with the draw. Of course, we didn’t catch any easy opponents, but I trust our title-hungry team and am convinced that we will be an unpleasant opponent for all teams at this World Cup,” said DBB President Ingo Weiss.

The first participation in the World Cup after the Dirk Nowitzki era is more than just a good place, it’s an Olympic ticket for Tokyo 2020. The German national team must be one of the two best European teams for this to happen, and this is likely to be extremely difficult.

If the USA, as the first nation to become world champions for the third time in a row, wins their intermediate round group as expected, the DBB team will also have to take first place in order to avoid a clash. “When it comes to the quarter-finals or semi-finals, of course you don’t want that,” Schröder had said about a possible duel with the US cracks, which the 25-year-old knows very well from his everyday NBA life. It’s not very unlikely.
