About the 87th 24 Hours of Le Mans

To this day, the spectacle at the Sarthe is regarded as one of the most important motorsport events in the world. A touch of Hollywood in Le Mans: 30 years after Paul Newman, another well-known US actor took place: Patrick Dempsey. The 24 Hours of Le Mans will be staged again this weekend. To this day, the spectacle at the Sarthe is regarded as one of the most important motorsport events in the world. The German Press Agency dpa documents some facts about the endurance classic.

Premiere

The first race was held from 26 to 27 May 1923. The car manufacturers wanted to prove the reliability of their models with the long-distance competition. The first overall winners were the French drivers André Lagache and René Leonard.

Tragedy

The accident of 1955 is still regarded as the greatest drama in motorsport history. After an accident of the Frenchman Pierre Levegh caused by Jaguar pilot Mike Hawthorn on the home stretch, parts of his Mercedes flew into the spectators. In addition to Levegh, more than 80 fans died. A total of well over 100 people lost their lives in the Le Mans races. The current circuit is 13.629 kilometres long and partly consists of public highways. The “Circuit de la Sarthe” has a full throttle share of about 75 percent, the top speed is more than 340 kilometers per hour.

Starting field

This year, 55 teams will be taking to the track. As always, there will be four starter classes. However, only the cars from the LMP1 class (Le Mans prototype 1) have a chance of overall victory.

Record winner

The Swabian car manufacturer Porsche has always been at the start since 1951 and has clinched a total of 16 overall victories. Ferrari follows with nine victories and Audi with eight. Dane Tom Kristensen won the race last year for the eighth time and is thus the record holder among the drivers.

Hollywood

The movie “Le Mans”, which was shown in cinemas in 1971, is regarded as a classic of racing film. The idea came from actor Steve McQueen, who also played the leading role.

Le Mans Star

In 1925, the pilots had to run to their lined-up cars for the first time on a signal, get in, start the engine and drive off. The so-called “Le Mans Start” provided an additional spectacle for the spectators and was only abolished in 1970 due to safety concerns.
