About the US Open
It is held the weekend of the third Sunday in June, coinciding with Father’s Day. This tournament is one of the four majors held throughout the year and appears on the calendar of both the PGA Tour and the European Tour. The U.S. Open has been played on several courses throughout its history, characterized by a demanding preparation, with high roughs and fast greens.
The U.S. Open is open to any professional golfer or any amateur who has an updated handicap of 1.4. Players can get the spot automatically or have to play a qualifying phase. Of the 156 spots in the tournament table, approximately half (typically 70 spots) are automatically awarded to players (winners of other majors, former tournament winners, players in the top 30 in the previous PGA Tour season, etc.).
Players who have to fight for qualification for the tournament must do so in two stages. First there is a local qualification phase, which is played on 18 holes on a hundred courses throughout the United States. There are also players who are exempt from playing this first phase and therefore go directly into the final qualifying phase. In this second phase, players who have passed the first round and those who will be exempt from it, will face each other on a 36-hole course, which takes place in several golf clubs in the United States and on two courses in Europe and Japan (one course in each of them).
There is no age limit for competing in the tournament; for example, in 2006 the youngest player ever to participate in the tournament was qualified: 15-year-old Tadd Fujikawa of Hawaii.
The prize fund for the tournament in 2014 was $9 million, with the prize for the winner being $1.6 million. In line with the other Majors, the U.S. Open winner receives a series of privileges including an automatic invitation to play the other three Majors for five years, and automatic qualification for the U.S. Open for the next ten years. They also automatically enter the PGA Tour for the next five seasons and are invited to play The Players’ tournament for five seasons.
The top 15 players from each edition automatically qualify for the next edition, and the top eight are automatically invited to the next season’s Masters.
