About the World Championships
The World Championships in Athletics (official designation IAAF World Championships in Athletics) are competitions to determine the world champions in the individual athletics disciplines. They have been organised by the IAAF since 1983 and are the fifth largest sporting event in the world after the Olympic Games, the Football World Cup, the Rugby Union World Cup and the European Football Championship.
Originally, the World Cups took place every four years, since 1991 every two years. In the intervening years either the Olympic Games and/or the European Championships take place.
In addition to the outdoor World Championships, there have also been indoor World Championships since 1985. Since 2004 they take place in the even years between the outdoor world championships.
Forerunners were two events in the Olympic years 1976 and 1980, at which world champions in non-Olympic athletics disciplines were determined. In 1976 in Malmö the world champion in 50 km men’s walking was determined, in 1980 in Sittard in two women’s competitions (3000 m run and 400 m hurdles) world champions were determined.
