About the US Open

Loud, tall, colourful and shrill. The tournament at the US Open is a superlative event in many respects. It is the 50th edition of the tournament since the beginning of the Open Era in 1968. On its birthday, the record sum of 53 million US dollars is paid out – more than at any other Grand Slam.
As with the Australian Open, the US Open is played on hard court. The tournament is organized by the ITF and is part of the ATP World Tour as well as the WTA Tour. In addition to the individual competitions, the winners will be determined in doubles, mixed, juniors and wheelchair users. Defending champion is Rafael Nadal, who won the tournament for the third time last year. Last year the US-American Sloane Stephens won the women’s event completely surprisingly.
History: Since when have the US Open been held?
In 1881 the first U.S. National Championships were held in the men’s singles. These took place in the Newport Casino, where the International Tennis Hall of Fame is located today (read the background story of the Hall of Fame here). In 1887 the women’s competition was added, but it was played at the Philadelphia Cricket Club. In 1915, both competitions took place at the West Side Tennis Club in Queens, New York, before they moved to Flushing Meadows in 1978, where the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center was built. Louis Armstrong Stadium was still the Center Court. In 1997 the Arthur Ashe Stadium (named after the US-American tennis player) was built, which with 22,547 seats is by far the largest tennis facility in the world. The US Open was played on grass until 1974, then on sand for three years, and since 1978 it has been played on hard court.
When and where do the US Open take place?
The main competition starts with the start of the main field on Monday, August 27, in New York City in the Queens district. The men’s final will take place on Sunday, September 9. One week before the main field starts, the qualification begins (on August 20) – also at the Flushing Meadows facility with the famous globe.

Where will the US Open be broadcast on TV?
Eurosport holds the broadcasting rights to the US Open in Germany. From Monday, 27 August 2018, the channel will broadcast daily on the main channel Eurosport 1 (from 5 p.m. German time) as well as the other channels Eurosport 2 and Eurosport 360. The favourites at the US Open
Men: There is no such thing as a big favourite for the title. Rafael Nadal won the preparation tournament in Toronto, but then cancelled his start in Cincinnati. The Spaniard as number one and defending champion is certainly the hottest candidate for the tournament victory. Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic are also promising candidates for the trophy. Juan Martin del Potro (2009), Andy Murray (2012), Marin Cilic (2014) and Stan Wawrinka (2016) have also proved that they can win the US Open.
