About the European Games
The European Games are a multi-sport event with the best European athletes organised by the European Olympic Committees. After Baku (Azerbaijan) in 2015, the second edition will be held in Minsk (Belarus) from 21 to 30 June 2019.
Since 1951, the Asian Games have been held every four years, at which athletes from Asian countries compete in (mainly) Olympic sports. In the same year, the Pan-American Games were held for the first time for athletes from South, Central and North American countries and the Caribbean. For some time now, the European Olympic Committees (EOCs) have been considering organising a continental event as well. In December 2012, the EOC decided to hold the European Games at their General Assembly in Rome.
The first host of the European Games was Baku in June 2015. Over 6000 athletes from over 50 countries and 20 sports competed in the capital of Azerbaijan. The Swiss delegation in Baku consisted of 131 athletes who returned with a total of 15 medals. After this successful first edition, the EOC chose the capital of Belarus, Minsk, as the venue for the second European Games. The competitions will take place from 21 to 30 June 2019 and the organisers expect 4000 athletes in 15 sports. In ten of these sports, the Minsk results will be included in the qualification for the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics.
After Azerbaijan 2015, the European Games will also take place in 2019 in an authoritarian country – Belarus. Organizers and supporters are currently touring Europe to present the Games, including in Berlin. And the German economy is already rejoicing. Denis Sidorenko, Belarus’ ambassador to Germany, says quite clearly what his country is all about at the Games: establishing the European Games and promoting Belarus. “The Republic of Belarus, and this is the official name of my country, is only 800 kilometres east of Berlin. But paradoxically Belarus remains an unknown country in Germany. And that is exactly what we want to change,” says Sidorenko.
Belarus has simplified the visa regulations for the European Games
Until 10 July, visitors to the Games can also travel by land without a visa, which was previously only possible at Minsk Airport. The organizers will receive support from the German business community. “The business community is extremely pleased that these games are taking place this year in Belarus,” says Ute Kochlowski-Kadjaia of the Eastern Committee – Eastern European Association of German Business.
“Belarus is, I believe, one of the most economically underestimated countries in Europe, and in this respect such sporting events offer a good opportunity to focus on these countries as well”. The human rights situation in Belarus was discussed at the press conference only in response to questions from journalists. President Lukashenko has suppressed the opposition and restricted fundamental freedoms. The country has the death penalty.
Rainer Lindner, Chairman of the German-Belarusian Society and active in industry, believes that the European Games must be used for dialogue. “It is a time of rapprochement with the states of Eastern Europe, which are undergoing a difficult transformation. Give the Belarusians this chance, they should show themselves, but they should also take up our values again on this occasion.
DOSB: Sport takes centre stage
So far there are no signs that Belarus is reforming more than superficially. Uschi Schmitz, Vice President of the DOSB, asserts that the German athletes are being prepared for what kind of country they lead to. During the games, everyone should then decide for themselves how to deal with them. The DOSB has not yet agreed any meetings with the opposition in Belarus. “If they come up to us there, we will certainly consider with whom we talk and with whom we meet, we are completely open for everything.
But sport is the focus. The DOSB competes with 149 athletes, less than in Baku. Schmitz nevertheless sees good medal chances. “We have many outstanding athletes there: Timo Boll or Dimitrij Ovtcharov, the two table tennis players, and other very good canoeists, also karate, shooters, there are also Olympic champions and world champions.
